Artist statement on work above:
The work above is a small selection of works I have been working on towards a show in Hay on Wye titled 'Our Land' over the last seven Months while also working part time as a development officer/tutor. The title suggests that the work is all to do with the landscape that I live and work in here at North Wales.
Although I also enjoy painting the world around me, still life's and abstract work, during the last seven Months I have been concentrating solely on Landscapes.
My art is influenced by the place I was born and brought up in, capturing the feeling, sense of history and atmosphere of the North Wales land.
I am expressing myself and reacting to the elements using my own individual language, seeing the world afresh through my eyes. I am interested in the rhythms and shapes of the land using strong colours and interesting compositions. I believe in creating original pieces and not simply following other trends.
I believe that the next step in the development of my painting career is to attend a MA course, such as the one in Manchester, where I will be taken out of my comfort zone and will be challenged to create new dynamic work for the current art world. On the Ma course in Manchester I will have the opportunity to experiment, push and develop my studio practice while working within a competitive environment alongside like minded people. I have a goal of becoming and continuing as a professional artist and the MA course will encourage and excite me to continue producing work for the current art world.
My current practice and area of interest is drawing and painting. It is important that I have a sustained period of time to develop my studio practice within a suitable environment. For the last nine Months I have been working alone and depending on individual judgement. Working alongside other like minded people and having the opportunity to question and push concepts and ideas will be of great benefit to me both as an artist and a person.
By attending an MA course such as the one in Manchester I hope to develop my studio practice and move on with my painting. I would like the opportunity to create new fresh dynamic work for the current art world, pusing ideas and my painting method and language. It is important that I explore all avenues of my painting practice in order to find my place in the art world today and to contribute to the development of contemporary painting.
I will achieve the above by simply working hard and being open to discussions and ideas by others. I will also achieve the above by pushing, experimenting and creating exciting work for the current art market. This will be an opportunity for me to explore different avenues and subjects within an exciting environment and commuity in Manchester. Working in a new vibrant environment will give me the energy to study, explore, experiment and create new fresh works.
The most important resourses will be both the studio space and other practicing artist around me. This will give me the competitive edge needed to push my painting methods and to explore further while discussing ideas with others. It is also important to have some feedback to work produced and resources such as a library with information to study and push ideas and concepts further than before.
In five years time I hope to be continuing with my painting practice, exhibiting not only here in the Uk but also having opportunities abroad. I also hope to continue with my teacher training by having the opportunity to continue as a tutor within communities or in Art Colleges, teaching art to people. It is my dream and goal to become a Welsh artist and to tutor art to others within a recognised Art college.
